About this book
Davis' Beginner's Grammar of the Greek New Testament was published originally in 1923 as the introductory grammar to go along with the extraordinary intermediate and advanced grammars by A. T. Robertson. Davis' work was not as popular as the similar work by Machen published the same year called New Testament Greek for Beginners . Both text cover the basic from the beginning without any assumption of prior Greek knowledge. However, Machen kept things very simple, glossing over explanations of spelling changes and limiting the scope of the Greek case system. The effect was Machen's text was much simpler for beginners but left clear gaps in knowledge that the intermediate and advanced grammars assumed the learner already possessed. Davis, however, lays out the scope of Greek basics much more fully, possibly to the fault of being too much for many beginners to absorb.
While this Grammar could be used by the complete beginner, the ideal use for Davis' grammar would be to first read Machen's New Testament Greek for Begginers or a similar modern introductory grammar like William Mounce Basics of Biblical Greek . Then read Davis, who will go over everything covered in either Machen, or Mounce acting as a very helpful complete review of the basics, but will fill in the gaps that others leave adding a much stronger base from which to understand New Testament Greek.
